KLAR! – An abbreviation that stands for “Klimawandel-Anpassungsmodellregion/Climate change adaptation model region”. Five municipalities, Bad Großpertholz, Großschönau, Moorbad Harbach, St. Martin und Unserfrau-Altweitra were officially declared the “KLAR! region Lainsitztal” in May 2021. Together, these five municipalities intend to prepare for climate change via adaptation measures, which are supposed to minimize negative consequences caused by climate change, and to additionally utilize emerging opportunities.

KLAR! - Of course, climate change is real!

The Austrian economy agrees that Austrian regions are being massively impacted by the consequences of climate change. Consequently, numerous effects such as extended dry periods, heavy rainfall and pest infestation (e.g., bark beetles, biodiversity loss) are already palpable within the region Lainsitztal. To face these challenges, as well as use emerging opportunities, proactive action is necessary and it is necessary today.

KLAR! manager Verena Litschauer emphasizes this as well, when she says “For each one of us, as well as for municipalities, climate change means to anticipate and prepare for new climatic conditions and possible extreme events. Therefore, adaptation measures and local activities for climate protection are indispensable.”

One of 74 regions in Austria

Region Lainsitztal was chosen by the Austrian climate energy fund, as one of 74 regions in Austria. 2016 the funding program Klimawandel-Anpassungsmodellregionen (KLAR!)/Climate change adaptation model regions was established by climate and energy funds, in cooperation with the ministry for climate protection, environment, energy, mobility, innovation and technology (BMK). Due to the KLAR! program, these regions receive financial and professional support, as well as current scientific insights.
