Project Description

Initial situation and motives:

In order to be able to ensure future supply reliability, while maintaining maximum energy efficiency and a high share of renewable energies, our energy systems need to successfully undergo fundamental change and transformation in the years to come. This transformation is vital to facilitate and keep up with the growing trend of digitalization and the everchanging parameters and requirements. These necessary changes and the challenges that come with it, mean that employees of energy- and technology companies already have to face numerous challenges in their daily life. Simultaneously, these current technological and systemic advancements open up new opportunities. As a result, the development and implementation of digital, integrative and local energy systems and markets, are consistently gaining more importance on a national as well as European level.

Quantification goals and planned results:

Due to the current lack of educational offers and opportunities for continuing education, the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Vienna, alongside partners in science and economics, was developing a future-oriented and customized qualification program, for the project at hand. This program contained measures to facilitate the sustainable advancement and implementation of digital solutions for regional energy systems and markets. The primary goals of said program included an increase in developmental, research and innovational competences of participating businesses, as well as the accumulation and sustainable establishment of new, innovative knowledge and new-found cooperations. Additional goals included the widespread dissemination of insights collected through the project, the incorporation of said knowledge into education at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Vienna and the establishment of an academic training course at the Technikum Vienna Academy, in order to make the accumulated knowledge permanently available. In preparation of joint research and the development of innovative concepts, first steps consisted of identifying central concepts within relevant research areas and topics and the resulting establishment of know-how withing the consortium. To facilitate this process, didactic concepts, tailored to participants, were developed. Finally, the accumulated knowledge was applied and consolidate via individual and group projects.

Contents within the consortium include:

  • Current developments, basic conditions, opportunities and challenges of digital, regional energy systems and markets
  • Digital technologies for energy systems
  • System architecture of digital energy systems
  • Digital energy markets: processes and business models
  • Interoperability as key factor for integrated energy systems
  • Safety and cyber security within an increasingly digitalized energy economy.
