Four schools withing the climate and energy model region Lainsitztal were engaging in a project titled “Self-sufficient into the future: through renewable energies – students are learning how!”, which deals with renewable energies within the region. Students were exploring energy consumption in school and were consequently developing measures for saving energy. In order to create awareness around renewable energies, excursions, for instance to SONNENWELT Großschönau or Welios, were being made. Field trips to energy producers (e.g., power plant Ottenstein, wood pellet plant) were intended to impart students the term “renewable”. Workshops about the topic of renewable energies (e.g., wind turbines), as well as constructing example models that are powered by renewable energies (e.g., solar powered cars, waterwheel) gave students the opportunity to become active participants.
