Project Description

Initial situation and problem definition

The increasing number of electric cars brings with it new challenges for the energy system. The ability to charge and discharge electric cars bidirectionally can reduce the negative effects and also create an additional benefit for our energy system that is beneficial to the grid and system. There is currently no joint, manufacturer-independent overall solution. In addition, the willingness and acceptance of people to use this technology has not been sufficiently taken into account in previous research. A lack of framework conditions also creates ambiguity and unanswered questions. There is currently no contact point or network, which means that innovations are only implemented with a delay.

Goals and methods:

The aim is to develop a holistic, cross-manufacturer solution approach to ensure interoperability across the entire value chain. In order to tap into the existing potential, the requirements and needs of future users will be identified and, based on this, holistic applications and business models will be developed, taking into account the respective legal, technical, ethical and social framework conditions. The interdisciplinary project consortium is to be expanded into an established network with the involvement of innovative companies in order to ensure that new knowledge and innovations reach the companies directly. The following goals are being pursued in detail:

  1. Establishment of an interdisciplinary network to jointly create the foundations and framework conditions for the development of holistic, user-oriented applications and business models in the vehicle-to-grid sector and thus enable the participating companies to play a pioneering role in this future market
  2. Identification of the basic requirements and needs of future (private) users and end customers for V2G applications, and, based on this, the development of holistic solution approaches, use cases and business models as well as their technical, social and legal validation
  3. Method development, implementation and validation of the complete value chain of selected V2G use cases (vehicle - charging station - energy management system - aggregation platform - marketing platform) with various components in the laboratory and in several real testbeds

Expected results:

  1. Technical, social and legal foundations and framework conditions for V2G in Austria, with a focus on the requirements and needs of future (private) users and end customers
  2. Tested concepts and methods to ensure interoperability across the entire value chain of V2G applications and their implementation in the laboratory
  3. Validated and holistic solution approaches, use cases and business models as well as their implementation in selected testbeds
  4. Knowledge, communication and participation platform as a central knowledge hub for all stakeholders on the topic of bidirectional charging in Austria
